With the price of bee packages over $100 my son tried a swarm trap to capture "wild/feral" bees last year. Two days later he had a swarm of honey bees, easily larger than Itialians, and amazingly....MUCH calmer and easier to wok with!
Here in Ohio N.E. temps were 49? the other day, and bees were going in and out with a good dozen hovering outside! My son already has plans to capture at least 2 - 3more swarms this spring!
Has anyone done swarm captures to add on to their hive count?
Any good or bad experences

So ya know the son has 6 years of bee experence, and loves "his girls" !

Way back when I was kid me and my dad did that all the time. We lived in Leigh NE at the time ad being a small town most people knew if they saw a swam to give us a call. Most of the time we didn't have any problem but once in a while we did. I bet over the few years we where there we added around 1/3 of our told of hived by doing that. I loved working with the bees up till I got stung over 150 times and now I cannot work with bees and have to be very careful if I get stung. It is in the 60s here today and I noticed a few bees flying around looking for flower or other such food

Yeah, I got "zapped" about 30-40 times when lifting up the upper hive and not seeing an attatched frame till I heard it drop off...!
Those girls did not like that one bit, and let me know!
(My son just stood still, nara a bite and watched me walk, then jog...then RUN for the house 150 yards away !)

I don't know about that. Most things that can/do bite can cause more problems and some even deadly so I think I would prefer getting stung by a bee then say getting a bite for many other things

i have done a couple of swarm captures, not traps. i do splits to nucleus hives also. mainly do splits to prevent swarming. once established, the nucs will sell for about $175.00 here.

Good to hear!
Had a sever winter here 2 years ago, and the whole hive froze (he harvested 35 lbs of honey from it), and no bees were eaten or hive population diminished.
He wanted to get back to keeping, and thought to try capturing a swarm with trap, and by the time he switched them over to a hive, they had already begun making comb on 7 out of 10 frames!

heres a few pics of my hives
