McCormick Broadcast Seeder

I have a McCormick Broadcast Seeder which I will pull with my Ford 2N to plant Oats this spring. I have been instructed to plant 3.5 bushel of oats per acre. How far open should the seed shoot on the seeder be open for the oats? What gear and speed should I travel with the Ford?
 
Set it about half way and try it. Try setting thin and lap half way for even seeding. Travel speed not critical try second gear. Old timers said 4 oat seeds in a horses hoof print is about right.
 
Others might have a better answer than me, more helpful....

That is all kinda 'it depends' sort of thing.... will take some trial and error to get dialed in.

If you err a little on the light side, you can go back and fix. If you seed too heavy, there you are nothing to fix it. Something to keep in mind.

I'd try to run 5 mph. Pulling the seeder wagon with the '39 H or '51 M I ran wide open in 4th gear. With Super H about 1200-1300 rpm in it's 7 mph fast 4th gear. Super H had a 300/350 Farmall tach, speedometer, hour meter installed.

We disked old corn ground into lands to drive seeder wagon by. We disked eight 38 inch rows, one round with a 12 ft disk, skipped a row, disked 8 more rows, skipped another row.

Somewhere on a forum someone copied the IH Endgate seeder owners manual, Maybe here, probably Red Power. Speed will effect your throwing distance of the seed, effect the width of swath, and that determines how far you open the seed metering chute.
