this might be a dumb question,,,,,,,what is the advantage to planting soybeans in 15" rows verses using a grain drill with 7" spacing.thanks

White mold.

Allowing a little more air through the rows helps keep white mold away.

In general up here in MN the fad of drilled beans came and went in the late 1990s. Most folk came back to 30 inch rows up here. Drilled beans use a lot more seed, and grow so short they are hard to feed in the bean head. My neighbor came along with a big new bean drill this year, otherwise you hardly see anyone using a drill any more up here. We are in the dead center of humid wet and breeding ground for white mold....

Weed control is probably a tad easier in narrower rows?

Another advantage to planting in 15s vs 7s is better emergence. The seeds are closer together, and then it is sort of a team effort to get out of the ground if it gets crusty.

I've found way more lodging in drilled beans, they get tall and spindly, plus the head on the combine knocks a lot over where it splits the rows. I'm going back to at least 15s this year.

If you are planting in 15" rows you are probably using a planter so you will get better control of planting depth and seed to soil contact as well as population control.
