broadleaf herbicides - last date and how close to trees?

I have a serious infestation of perennial non-grasses on my lawn, dandelions, Canadian thistles, creeping vines, what appear to be aggresive oregano and thyme, nettles, chives (smells like sphagetti when I mow some areas) etc. With 4+ acres, roundup and replant is a lot out of my budget. Plus my wife says no. As a non-certified non-farmer (quit when I moved) sprayer I'm somewhat limited to the over-the-counter checmicals. Looking at 2-4D type lawn spray. Hence my questions.

1. It's in the 40's here in lower Michigan, had one moderate frost which didn't really knock them down. Is it too late to spray them (assuming I can get a couple days without rain...).
2. How close to woody perennials can I spray? There are quite a few trees, pins, maples, locust, fruits, plus some nice viburnium that my wife loves.

Thanks!

2-4d + mercoprop and dicmba.

Best instruction in the 8 pages is Do not use on desirable Clovers. LOL.

I did find the one little line in 8 pages of hazards warnings, and listing of every weed except grass that said best application temperature 60-90F. So I look good until next year (since I too am in the 'thumb', although more like in the 'ball of the thumb', and we probably won't see a week of 60 without rain).

The confusing one is 'not on roots of trees'. Is that not on exposed roots, or not on the root area, which I usually assume is the size of the drip line for most of my fruit trees?

Not a very good label.

I'm not sure, but I thought the rule of thumb was stay back half again the diameter of the drip line.

My first application of a herbicide after obtaining my applicators permit......my front yard with a pump up. Used Graze-on P+D. I thought I was out of the root zone (beyond branch drip line) but they got really mad at me. I think the D did it since it's a brush killer. Didn't loose any Hackberry trees but they showed their discontent for a couple of years.

A little late to the conversation, but I spray roundup (generic) on the bottom third of Christmas trees after they have hardened off at a 1% mix rate without problems. Usually I don't see the grasses / weeds die, they just don't grow again in the spring. Apply just to the point of run off.

I would spray 1% anytime of the year on bark and not worry. And often do so around my house trees.
