Posted this on another site and decided to add it here. Since there is no hay site particularly, I guess this site is the closest relative.

Was at the farm store yesterday and saw a skid full of Teff hay seed. Got on the www this AM and read up on it.

The results seem to speak for themselves in terms of a summer hay crop and volume. What I see as a mountain to climb is their recommendation (Teff www) for planting. Don't know how effectively I can get where they say I need to be.

Interested in your experiences with the crop.

Thanks,
Mark

plant a few acres a year and use a brillion seeder. Works perfectly and the cows will leave the grain to get at a teff bale! The seedbed needs to be very firm to get off to a good start. Looking at getting my 3rd cutting here in southern minnesota if it ever quits raining. Any other questions let me know.

I don't know the number but it's a 1960's vintage double disc JD with the galvanized seed hopper....no fertilizer hopper. I can adjust the spring tension on the discs. Is that anything like a Brillion?

I just finished preparing a very work intensive seed bed and broadcasting Austrian Field Peas and fertilizer, lightly harrowed and came back and drilled in Jumbo Rye. After that I came back with my roller and it's really flat and smooth.

From what I read you do all that prep, including the roller and then broadcast the seeds on top of the packed soil. Let the rain cover them with dirt when it does rain???????????

Thanks for kicking in on this.

Ha! My satellite internet went down while trying to post this. I smelled rain. Looked outside, and all my work yesterday to get everything done for the forecast rain paid off after all. Most of all Central to E. Tx. is covered in light showers coming up from the South.....perfect. I got up this morning and they had dropped it from the forecast (after upping from nothing to 1.1" on Sunday) and I was very disappointed. But....life is good!

A brillion is similar to your drill but instead of disc openers it has packing wheels so it just basically drops the seed on top and rolls over it. I have heard that teff doesnt compete too well with other crops so the rye may affect its germination. Biggest thing we have found was to get the seedbed firm. A good hard rain after seeding will get it going perfectly. Love the teff! We have 54 small (4x4) round bales off three acres so far. Will be cutting again as soon as the weather cooperates. We are just straight seeding it by itself.
