Different height corn

Was at my friends house today and looked at the corn field across the road and throughout the field every other 12 rows were different height. Obviously it was planted with a 12 row planter. Corn varies 1 foot in height every other 12 rows. It's like they put different seed in every 12 rows. Does anyone know what this is called or seen this before? Thanks, Mark

Just a different variety in 6 of the 12. You come back along side going the other way so you get 12 side by side.

Why would they put two different varieties in the same field? Just to see which would do better maybe? thanks Mark

Maybe. I've done it just to use up seed. I didn't want all the hopers running low,so I'd put all of it in one end so I could get it used up without the risk of the whole planter running out. Sometimes you end up with just one end hopper with a certain variety in it just to use it up.
