Seeding question

I cleared a field out of the woods about 20 years ago, seeded it to timothy. Timothy is long gone and what grew in is really thin and short. Getting fertilizer on next week and thinking about waiting a couple weeks for it to soak in and broadcasting some tim seed and lightly disking/rolling it in shallow with a small single-gang disk. Am I wasting my time and money?

Disking seems kind of drastic...like wont you be burying a lot of seed too deep? How big is the clearing? When i plant grass this late in year i broadcast oats, let them sprout and overseed with grass. Oats winter kill here. Make a good cover crop for the grass.

I was wondering about that, why I asked. It"s about 2 acres, corner of 8 acre field. Maybe the pinwheel rake would be better. I have a hitch on it to pull the Grimm tedder that I could hook the roller to.

What is the ph of your soil? We often feel adding fertilizer is the answer, and it often is.....

But if your ph is low, starts with a 5, then your plant roots can't create enough weak acid to loosen and suck up nutrients from your acidic soil. Doesn't matter how much you have available it's not really available.....

Or if you have real high ph, over 7.5 into the 8s, then you need to pick the right plants to deal with that, as some don't thrive in high ph situations and it's difficult to fix a high ph soil.
