Are any of you familiar with rye straw? I have a neighbor that has a couple fields nearby and if the straw is usable like wheat straw I would bale some.

Rye straw is not as absorbent as oat straw. Barley and wheat are not either. However, we raised barley for years, and chopped the straw, blew it into the haymow, and used it in the dairy cow stalls. It worked well using it that way. Long straw got kicked into the gutter, chopped, not so much. What is your end use?

Rye is the best straw there is. We bale several thousand bales per year to sell and never had anyone who said they did not want more. It is much better than oat straw as the cattle won't eat as much and it will absorb more than oat straw. The second best straw is barley with fall sown barley much better than spring. If cut with a rotary combine rye straw bales do not stay together very well. Try it you will not be disappointed. Tom

loved it used to bale it and sell to grocery stores, nick nack shops 10.00 for 40lb bale. miss it some but shop took over and took weather issues out also. but yes it good clean and very nice eye appeal if you get it right time. but it is slick.
