I remember when I was a kid,Dad used to go out with a bucket and a slat from a crate. He'd knock them in to the bucket with the slat, then run a little bit of gas in the bucket to kill them.

An early adapter of Integrated Pest Management I guess.

I do not use chemicals in my garden but I have found many plants help keep bugs off. Marigold and Basil help a lot. You also might try this web site. The sell a book full of helpful hints on how to do things in a garden with out chemicals. They sell a book full of odd ball help tips

Spraying them with garden store sprays is a waste of time - they are immune to them. As mentioned below I've had the best luck knocking them into a pail with a splash of gasoline - even kills the adults. If you don't keep up with them you will have a lot more next year. I think there is a milky spore spray you can buy that also works but isn't cheep. If you get too many for your potatoes they will move over to your tomatoes also. Another thing that helps is a daily inspection under the leaves for the yellow egg clusters. Destroy them before they hatch.

when the dew is heavy or sprinkler is just turned off powder them with flour. beetles will eat the leaf with flour plug up and die with very little leaf eaten. have to re dust every couple days to a week depending on weather.
1 trick I use every year, when they get to heavy and I am tired of dusting I cut the plant off level with the ground, sometimes just run over with the lawn mower. I have lots of potatoes every year and even have more on the ones I have cut off versus the ones I left ,back when I started trying it.

The folks that believe in the companion planting idea say that tater beetles are repelled by members of the bean family. I don't know if it
works or not but since I started planting a real thin row of green beans on top of newly planted potatoes I have had a few beetles every year
but very little real damage.
