First thing is I have never done any kind of cultivation besides on a large scale cotton farm using a 12 row cultivator on a stacking toolbar.
I recently bought a Case IH 265 offset tractor for my garden. The tractor has the front, middle, and rear cultivator frames, front "diamond" tool bar with 7" cultivators, disk bedders/hillers for middle, and 16 inch cultivator sweeps on the rear.
It also came with a set of King Cultivators like these: https://burchstoretractors.com/products/pair-of-king-cultivators-for-farmall-140-130-super-a-100-cub-super-c-and-other-tractor-models
My beds are 28" wide and I have 16" wide middles between the beds. After planting I would like to cultivate the middles using the 16" sweeps on the rear, but I am not sure what to use on the beds. I know I won't do away with hoeing, but I would like to use my tractor as much as possible.
What are your thoughts on just using the King Cultivators for the beds? I was going to angle them so they match up with the beds.
What about using just sweeps for the beds? I think one sweep might work on each side of the plant, but would the 7" sweeps that came on it work the best or should I use half sweeps?
Like I said I am a complete rookie when it comes to cultivating a garden with an offset tractor with middle cultivators. I am sure there are different opinions as to what is best, but I would like to hear different setups for my garden. The good thing is I have four rows to the side of the garden that I am not planting that I can play with the configurations until I get it right.
I will mainly be cultivating beans, peas, and tomatoes (when they are small/short).
Thanks!
