Rolling soybeans

It's getting more popular around here. More people are using the big land rollers to smooth/knock down rocks in the area. What are your experiences? Seems some guys do it when the plants are a couple inches tall. Some immediately after planting. You'd think that would help with better seed to soil contact and better germination, but not such a good idea on damp ground. Really interests me because of a couple rocky fields. Thoughts?

Main reason is to punch rocks down. It does give better soil to seed contact in Dry soil, and tends to seal moisture in somewhat. Also breaks up any crop residue in no til beans. Has become a standard practice around here. Ben

I know they roll them down to increase yeild. Sounds strange but stressing the plant increases the yeild.

Been rolling for some years. If rolling is delayed until after emergence, growth stage of the bean is critical, and can increase yield. Wrong stage, it can break off the plant and reduce yield. Our primary reason is to push small rocks down, thus the auto height header works so much better. Of course, cultivation after rolling is out of the question, since it"ll bring up those little rocks again.

I'm going to plant some beans this year, first time. Planted some Austrian Winter peas last fall and checked the other day for nodules and they are coming right along. Seed store said I didn't have to inoculate, I didn't, and am getting nodules. What about beans, inoculate.......building up the N, not harvesting? How deep? I usually roll after I plant for packing and seed to soil contact....yes...no???

Thanks,
Mark

Hear you but it's a PIA for me anyway as I'm not setup for it. The seed dealer said Austrian peas didn't need it and that was a reason for selecting them. I may just plant peas in these other areas. 50# goes for $40. Don't know what Soybeans to plant sell for. Probably doesn't matter as I'm not buying that many.

Thanks for your reply,
Mark

I'm not sure what his land is like, but it's not that easy here in all fields. I have one 20 acre chunk that you could walk from rock to rock all the way across the field. I pick them every year, but could spend 2 months our there trying to get them all. I rented a hay buster rock picker a couple years ago and spent 1 week out there every night after work. Hit it with a vibrashank/packer to fit it down/clean up my mess very Shallow, just covering tracks, and it looked like I didn't do anything. Have another 20 right next to it and there's not 1 rock in it. It's like that here.

Went too 30 inch rows for beans 2016. Previously planted with drill.....always pulled Brillon packer behind. Last year used 6by 30" IH air corn planter and rolled field before planting. Switched too corn planter to get better on population. Drill is essentially a controlled spill......800 IH planter pretty easy to dial in 140000 seed count. Results... best yield ever in 30yrs with beans. Weather a big factor !
