Done with harvest

Finished up the beans yesterday. It has been the poorest crop I have ever raised. The beans stayed green until we got a hard freeze which was two weeks ago, but it was too late the deer already got them.

Still waiting for the ground to freeze here so I can finish picking corn. I'm not the only one around here sitting on his hands waiting.

I just hate that, its like a dark cloud hanging over your head! I have been like that all fall waiting for those darn beans to ripen.

Good deal.

It was a challenging year here, rained like a rain forest.

Was muddy combining, but got it done, it has rained since, we are having unseasonably warm temps but 2-3 inches of rain the past 2 weeks, that is miserable and muddy in our climate at 35 degrees.....

Beans yielded really well here, I don't know why they usually hate wet conditions.

Corn was better then I thought, but places without tile were uneven.

Glad you got it hammered through. Do you do fall tillage where you are, have that left or catching up behind the combine?

I had such a weed problem this year mainly foxtail that I am going to burn off my fields and then work them, I would like to put in cover crop but we will have to see what the weather does.

It might take you 2-3 years to get that foxtail cleaned out, all seeds need to grow and be killed.

I am going to put these fields into alf alfa or clover and try to mow my way out of this mess.

That can work.

We are sort of having a blizzard today, except no snow. Got the 40mph winds and the temp is dropping like a rock.

No chance of any cover crop this time of year here. 18 degrees and heading down.....

Paul

Temp is doing the same thing here, but we don't have the wind yet. Tell me Paul, what does winter wheat do when planted in the spring? Will it stay green most of the summer or ripen with no seed

Good question, I don't know. Dad planted winter wheat a couple times, but had to give up. It winter killed too easily. He stuck with rye, that would survive.

Paul

Does the quality, protein or test weight, suffer, or the yield, if you were to plant it in spring?

Sort of like oats, if you plant it late here, you get oats but it is 26# test weight, at 45-50 bu. If you plant it when there might be a little snow on the ground yet, it might be 38#, 95 bu - if things line up.

Winter wheat never was popular around here, this is spring wheat country and no one Harley plants that any more, too wet a ground and too much clay, it doesn't pay the bills. It gets to where you slow down and look if you see a small grain field any more.

Paul

Yield suffers, as far as protein and test weight, I don't know, never tested it, but I would imagine they would be lower. Only planted it 1 or 2 times in the spring.
Winter wheat has gained some popularity here, mostly for the grain guys to break up the corn/bean rotation, there is enough hills around here that if it don't rain for a couple days even after heavy rains we can hit the fields again, and almost no chance of anyone around here getting flooded. Well maybe a flash flood in the bottoms but that is it.
