Non RR alfalfa herbicide

Hi guys, need a bit of information from the brain trust on this fantastic site. Have 7 acres of first year alfalfa that is weedy and want to kill the weeds before frost hits so its clean in the spring. What herbicide is good to spray on this non roundup ready stand to kill weeds and not my alfalfa also what can I use in the spring for weeds in the same stand.

Thanks
Leonard

I don't know of any thing right off hand to do such, I have a lot of weed/grass in my fields from all the rain and heat, just finishing up fourth cutting and it is heavier then first was. Need to wrap it all cause it don't dry and the cows won't eat dry weedy hay. What to do about it? I am wondering the same thing, either cut it and hope they don't come back in the spring or plow it under and start a cycle over again! Mine is just grass like fox tail and crab grass with some horse weed popped up here and there, so I am going to leave mine, and hope for the best! LOL

You can use poast plus to kill the grass, also rural king sell clethodim that will do the same. We switched to RR along time ago but that is what we use to use..better read label to be sure tho its be awhile.

What kind of weeds do you have? If they are annuals and are not smothering the stand, I wouldn't worry about them. Harvesting the crop can also help a lot, as well.

I'm not a genius and am just learning a lot of this stuff myself. I had a new seeding a few years back that had a lot of lambs quarter and some other stuff snuffing out the alfalfa. The local coop sprayed it (don't remember what) and all it seemed to do was stunt the weeds. To their credit, they did tell me it would only help, not eliminate the problem. That was in the spring. Since, I've just went ahead and mowed the field before anything went to seed. Works better. Also, if frost is close and it's annual weeds your dealing with, the frost should take care of it. Just don't let the weeds go to seed. Just my thoughts. Again I stress I'm still learning.

I used to mess around years ago spraying Raptor, Butyrac, Velpar, and a few others and I can tell you they are all really expensive and a waste of time. Your stand will clean up on its own.

Go mow it right now. Rake and bale if there is enough there / Sell as cattle feed. In the spring same advice. Mow the day before you see the first purple flower LOL.
