Combining rye max moisture

Hi everyone, I tested a couple spots in my field with a good digital moisture meter and it came in at 15% So I waited a week but now weeds are starting to pop through. So I decided to run a test pass with the combine and checked the moisture content and it came in at 14.8 now. I'm afraid if I wait too long the weeds will start to go to seed and the green matter will become an issue. Is it safe to combine it at 15%? I know it's supposed to be 13% but I'm not sure how much 2% really matters. Please advise, I want to get going on this at noon today! Thanks!

What are you doing with the grain?

Selling it, big discounts if it's too wet. Your call which is worse, moisture discount or lodging and weeds.

Storing a few 100 bu for your own use in a wooden grainery - probably be ok.

Getting a few 1000 bu stored in a metal bin for 9 months - that might cause a lot of spoilage.

Kinda depends what you want to do with it?

Most folk have gone to straight combining these days, I still swath and let the grain and weeds dry in the windrow.

We use it as a cover crop. We bale some in the spring for straw and we leave about 15 acres to combine for seed for the following year. None is used for food. We usually put it in a grain wagon and then move it over to large 1 ton seed bags. So what do you think? 14 to 15% ok? Also this is the only way I've ever done it, I don't know how to swath it and then harvest... When would you cut it down and with what...a sickle bar mower?

Matt, a swather will be required. Either that or you could sickle cut and windrow using a lilliston 7200 or something similar. if you use a rake to make your windrow it will not properly feed into the combine and you'll have all sorts of problems. trust me I tried it.

I just took another sampling and I'm at 13.8% I'm going to start combining! Thanks for the advice. Hopefully my old 91 combine will hold together for another season. Haha
