Thorny vine

Was at my sister's today and she was telling me about a thorny vine she has growing in the fence line around the house that she can't seem to get rid off. She has cut the vine out before and sprayed Tordon with no results. Has sharp thorns up to 1" long on the new growth and more smaller thorns cover the older growth that becomes woody. She says it grows amazing fast, moving along the fence and trees. Anyone help me identify this vine and recommend a good way to kill it? We are located in central Iowa if that helps.

I can't tell for sure in the picture but I have a similar plant in hedgerows and other areas and we call it wild rose bush.Nasty stuff to get caught up in and mowing it only acts to help it grow better. Does the stuff you are talking about have flowers and resemble a rose bush?I have killed the wild rose bush with a serious shot of round up. Has to be way more concentrated than would be used for grass or weeds. The dead brush after it dies is just as hazardous.

Is that vine a green in color most of the way from end to end?? I have stuff that is green and nasty to mess with

I was thinking it was wild rose too, but doesn't appear to be shrub-like or cluster. Sister said she's dug some up and appears it spreads by rhizomes, which would explain why it's all over the fence line. Plus I've had the unpleasant experience of removing wild rose from other places, and this stuff is nothing like what I've dealt with in the past.

I don't know about cattle but it would certainly keep me contained! The thorns are long, thin, and very sharp.

Yup, green until you get to the older growth near the base then it's kind of woody but still has all the thorns. It is nasty stuff.

That was my initial thought too but the thorns are different than any other wild rose I've seen and more numerous, and lack the cluster or shrub appearance. Sister cleared out the fence line last year and it has already spread out over the fence again.

Wouldn't be Prickly ash is it? Can't see the pic to well, if so should wish for Multiflora Rose instead, I have both, don't know how I could live without them! LOL

And the thorns are such that you can not grab it any place since there close to each other and well pretty much all over the vine

Wait till it leafs out and hit it with crossbow. 3 oz per gallon. That stuff is death in a bottle. I think it will kill rocks!

Around these parts along the Mason Dixon, we refer to that stuff as green brier. It's usually in the woods, and hard to penetrate.
