i have a five acre field that needs to earn some money and possibly help my tax burden. I was considering soybeans but I have no idea what it will cost per acre to do it right. I will rent the counties no till drill which is ~$50 and have my neighbor spray and combine. will there be any meat left on the bone? thanks in advance.

This year?

Most discussions are which crop will lose less this year, corn or beans.....

Put non gmo soys in and get the premium. Check around and see who offers a premium for non gmo. This yr in MI its $1.25 over market. Last yr we sprayed 1 time and yielded 52 bushel/acre. Just a thought.

What has been growing in this field? What type of soil? You should be able to make some descent money depending on the yield.Soybeans are around $8.50 per bushel now and should yield between 30 to 60 bushel per acre. Or cash rent it to your neighbor and let him take the gamble. Not sure where your at but REASONABLE cash rent here would be 150 to 250 dollars per acre.

In 2012 I took over 25 acres that had been rented for years to a farmer that had all but ruined it. Middle of May, quack grass 3' high. I had 2 tons of lime per acre put on previous fall. Sprayed it with Round Up and planted soy beans with a no-till drill. Sprayed once more with Round Up and managed to get 40 plus bushels per acre which was not bad considering I did not know anything about soybeans and had added only a small amount of starter fertilizer with a pull behind spreader. Just guessing. No soil tests whatsoever. Was I ever surprised to see a full semi load of soybeans leave in the fall. Since then, I have soil tested with GPS plots, followed the advice of a top notch agronomist, added fertilizer by the book, etc. and have only managed to improve my out put enough to roughly approximate my input. And oh yes, soybeans are bringing about three times what I received for that first crop. Go figure. (;>))
