hello,
I have about 20 bags of seed corn left over from 2015..its silage corn...how can I keep this from going bad for next year.. I have it in an old freezer to keep the mice and rats from it..never had this much left over...lost some rented ground at last minute...thanks,,,bill

Your doing a pretty good job of it with what you have, keep it dry and keep the vermin away and it should be O.K. Must be a big freezer.

That's a big freezer was my thought too, sounds like you are doing well. Seed corn stores well, if you can keep the critters away.

I had a bag of small seed corn, was 43kb bag, left over in the corner of the shed, usually I pack then away nicely but only one bag kinda slipped my mind. Came in spring to put it in the planter, about threw the empty bag up into the roof when I lifted it.....

Was a small hole chewed in the corner, over winter the fuzzies ate out the corn and the bag stayed there looking like normal. Only a few seed hulls left in it.

I still tease my wife about looking for that 43 lb mouse in the shed......

Germination of old seed could be erratic. Your realer probably destroys all leftover seed. Check with your dealer for his recommendation. He will probably take it back and give you "store credit" on fresh seed for the 2016 season.

It is true that germination could be reduced. However it is very likely it will be fine if stored in cool dry place. Seed companies routinely hold seed over multiple year. Spring of 2015 it was rumored that pioneer was forcing dealers to take seed that was multiple years old. What companies do when they hold seed over is a re-germination test it. Google germination test and you'll find the simple instructions for it. I'd suggest doing your own germ test late winter and assuming it goes OK, plant it. Then find a new dealer that will take returns I'm the future.

For years I bought a blend from major brands., 80-100 acres worth. Typically 90-95-100 day corn that was returned the year before. I used it for silage, but also combined the balance. Price discount was major, and it always worked out well. Typically single cross corn from the previous year.

It should be ok to plant this year, I've got some seed corn that is going on 4 years old and last year it came up great.
