Was not trying to keep up....

Wasn't trying to keep up with Animal, really I wasn't. If you all saw in the combine area his combine burned....

I was finishing up the last 3 acres of cornstalks, chiseling them this afternoon before the rain.

As the lightening and thunder came so loud I could hear it in the cab, just started sprinkling. Only a couple short rounds to go.

And, the engine made bad noises, and smoke came out, and I don't think that will be good news. It limped to the edge of the field. I think engine is toast.

Heavens opened up, raining like crazy. Thunder and lightening is not normal this time of year....

50mph winds are forcast for tonight or morning.

And the wife is kinda excited about the water backing up in the basement, looks like a plugged sewer line. Oh joy. Thought that was gonna be a simple trap under the shower, but no that looks like a different, bigger deal going on.

Well at least I'm done, and have all winter to figure out tractor options.

"have all winter to figure out tractor options."

It still makes you feel awful anxious though, don't it?

I'm headed to get a new-to-me chore tractor tomorrow. It makes me exceptionally nervous. These things bring in our livelihood. At least I can contact the previous owner as it is on a dealer lot. I hate buying used machinery way more than haggling on a new car. Diesel engines last forever but they can drop out fast and be very pricey.

I lost the 4450 MFWD a few days ago- backs up, no going forward. Dealer estimated 50 hrs labor to fix (50???). C3 clutch pack on the 15 speed power shift. Not a squeak of warning! Yeah, plus parts. Renter did my tillage today, not taking the dealer"s offer of a "good" deal on a rental.

Just towed it this afternoon to the neighborhood mechanic. He said see what we find when we drop the pan. I'm expecting the worst.

I see a reman engine is around $5000. Not sure what the labor would be for the swap.

Then I have to wonder about the clutch, I've put 2000+ hours on it! got it with 5000 on it. I've no idea if any clutch work was done or when.

How much do you put in a tractor you bought for $10,600 10 years ago..........

Wouldn't mind 190 hp with front wheel assist, but that's some real money yet to find a good one.

Small farm, small budget. ;)

Wife likes the color blue, and she seems to run a lot of tillage for me so I have to consider her preferences too! :) :)

50 hrs labor sounds way too many hrs to me just to repair C3. I wish I had access to a JD flat rate manual for a 55 series tractor. That dealers technicians must take a lot of coffee breaks.

If it makes you feel any better..... I got a $2000 water bill back the first of October, dry as a ... here. I dug for 4 hours and couldnt find the leak. Looked at the pile of PVC pipe, my rock saw, and said what the heck, its 440 feet, the dinky 3/4 line isnt big enough I'll just lay a new one..... I KNOW where the septic is, dad put it in in 1976, I watched.... (mind you I was 9)..... you know where this is going.....

I spared everyone the pics of what a 170 hp JD powered rock saw does to a septic tank......and you know where all that s... goes when the saw hits it... and of course this is on a Saturday, and while I have all the pipe in inventory I don't inventory septic tanks.

Total for the job was $120 (my wholesale) in the pipe, 3 hrs of rock saw time, and 2 men for 3 hrs laying the pipe. Plus a new septic install (my cost $3300) and 3 days of not flushing.....

Thanks for the smile, I'm sure the blue words were not smiling that day......

Paul

That they did my friend.... that they did.... and then there was the setting the new tank,on bedrock, putting the line in, and finding a half bubble of rise in the line going into the tank... a whole day with a hoe ram to get it to fall correctly.............
