bean field into hay ground

Have a 6 acre patch in beans right now, wanting to turn into grass hay ground for next year. Thinking about disking it and using a broadcast seed spreader at the same time this fall. Or wait till spring?

Might want to wait till later in the fall unless it's a winter crop . The winter snow and frost will bury your seed my only concern right now would be that it would germinate now and get frozen off in the winter waiting till later and it might not germinate till spring

Depends on your climate/ location.

Your plan works for a recreational spot, if it comes up weak oh well, if it comes up great great.

For a productive field you gain a lot with fall seeding by giving the grass a head start, but you risk such a late planting (in my location) being froze off and getting weak over a tough winter. Then you deal with more weeds and several years of thin until it thickens up.

In general an early or mid fall seeding is better, but after beans can be quite late in a cold climate.

I'm toying with the idea of tearing up a bumpy field road and reseeding it yet, I donno if that's a good idea either at this time.....

Depends on what part of the country your in. But the way they are talking about El Niño it might pan out this fall? Here in MI I'd wait till spring.

I am I NE Iowa. Likely take the beans out in a couple weeks, not ready yet. Most years we have some decent days in October. Thinking maybe mostly ryegrass?? Want it for horse hay.

A couple of weeks from now is into the first/second week of October so it's iffy but probably OK. I'm in Northwest Iowa. A couple of years ago the combine caught the corner of a bromegrass waterway while combining beans and shaved the bromegrass off and ran it through. The brome seed sprayed out the back of the combine and the next spring I had the nicest stand of bromegrass where that seed came out of the combine.

You should make at least one pass over the disced ground with a spike tooth harrow. Then use the broadcast seeder. Followed with a pass with a cultipacker.
