August seeded alfalfa?

Any one ever seed alfalfa in August? I am thinking of doing so in another week to ten days with a cover crop, how did it work if you did? Thanks

Becoming common around here, no cover crop, less weeds and less gulley washer rains this time of year. Neighbor really likes that plan.

Should work fine- I"ve straight seeded alfalfa as late as Sept 15......I"m an hr NW of MPLS, at latitude 45 degrees. Here, it"s recommended by Sept 1. Neighbor commonly filled silo before Labor Day (when kids went back to school)- then seeded.

I like it. Just ordered a half a pallet of 403 and a half pallet of Roundup Ready. We won't discuss how much that cost, lol.

It'll work. I usually plant a little deeper than in spring, but other than that no changes. If after wheat, you will need to control volunteer wheat that rarely grows until the drill packs it down. Also FORGET the cover crop. The biggest issue with fall seeding can be a lack of moisture. You do not want oats or something else competing with the alfalfa.

We mix the seed with the liquid fertilizer and that is spread run over it lightly with a culti-mulcher.Then hope you get a little rain.
