Oats too thick?

I am thinking my under seeded oats are so thick it is not letting sunlight to hay seedlings? As much as I would like to leave oats till they mature I am thinking it may be better for the alfalfa/Timothy/trefoil/bhrome that I have a pile of money invested in the seed,to cut the oats for baleage? Opinions please

I nearly always cut oats that are underseaded to grasses for baleage. Gives the grass a real good start, and the baleage is great feed. Cut the oats once the grain is just past the milk stage, don't let them get too ripe.

The biggest danger would be if the oats decided to lodge.

Oatlage is the safest bet... that looks like a really good crop, though.

Tom I'm facing the same problem in a waterway I seeded this spring. I seeded a bushel and a half of oats but with the rain we have had plus the high fertility of the soil I have a chest high jungle of deep green oats. They will be cut and baled in a couple of days so the seeding can catch some sunlight.

That"s one reason why I went to using barley as a nurse crop. Lower seeding rate, fewer plants let sun through, and feed value of the grain is 92% that of corn. Very palatable for cattle and hogs. Making oatlage is fine if you don"t need the straw, but the alfalfa may still turn out fine if you leave it for grain, but it does not lodge.

Dad always used flax as a nurse crop, said thinner stand, shorter straw let the sunshine through. Also made a nice mid-summer cash crop.
However, had to plan ahead to find a market for the grain, sometimes had to haul longer distance. Can't imagine why the local elevator didn't want to tie up a big big with 300 or so bushels.

thanks for all the input. Looks like I am going to leave them kind of "by default" as haying is late getting done and I just have not got the time to deal with right now.
