leafy spurge in alfalfa

If its a small spot hit it with the rotary cutter. If its the whole meadow spray it and start over with a row crop.

Are you certain it is "Leafy Spurge"? If it is, you've got a tough one to control. Is this in a new seeding? It might be what I call "Yellow Rocket". 2-4D and Roundup will work....but will have detrimental effects upon the alfalfa. I"ve seen 2-4D make alfalfa sick, but never kill it....provided it is an established stand. New seedings are a different matter. You might check the label on "Pursuit". It might work when the stand is dormant. Get your check book out though.

not for sure that's what some folks are saying it is. looked at some pic's of leafy spurge now have to look at what I got. what does "yellow rocket" look like?

Well, when I first looked up "leafy spurge" on the internet, the first thing that I thought was "yellow rocket". After viewing it onthe internet, I wasn't sure. Based upon what I saw on the internet, what you have "really" does not look like "yellow rocket". My wife says that what "I" call "yellow rocket", is "wild mustard". Sorry, I realize I've been no help.

actually you were a lot of help. I looked up yellow jacket and found that what I needed to look for was "latex" when you cut the weed. I had none. that being said, your wife is correct, it's a form of wild mustard.
thanks again
Gary

Wow......sometimes things work. I read the responses (and yours) to my wife. NOW.......her head is all swollen! She swears that what you have is "wild mistard". She claims that as a child her dad would have her walk their alfalfa fields and pull the stuff by hand. I've seen it several times in new seedings of alfalfa......especially if oats were used as a nurse crop. The seed comes in with the oats from the northern states and can also be in the alfalfa seed. I've NEVER seen it be a persistant problem. Usually, after the first cutting it is gone. Now, I'm pretty sure you will not have a long term problem. You never did say how old the stand is.? Assuming we're correct in the identification, I wouldn't spray it. Let the mowing machine kill it.
