old new fence post

my neighbor has about 80 old wooden post about 5-6" round, never been in the ground been has been out in the weather for around 10yrs. do yall think these would still last several years in the ground or not worth buying? they still look solid.

If they have been stacked horizontally and covered there might be very little loss, water damage is usually caused by settling on top of the installed posts and sinking in. I would pick a couple up and see if they feel like they weigh about right and tap with a hammer, they should have a ''thump'' to them. I would not pay over half of new price for them.

Real man-made fence posts? I would be very choosy about looking through them.

Now, if they were fence posts like we use here - a straight hedge limb of that diameter - they are good to go. If they are cedar I would be skeptical as our cedar around here doesn't last as long. I only use hedge. I did use purchased posts when I redid the loading and sorting chute just because I was attaching pipe and needed them stick straight.

I'd not be worried about them. There is some migration of the preservative over time but if the price is right I'd sure get them and use them with no worries. When you buy new you never know how long they've been sitting in the post yard. Last load of posts I got had 2 bundles with a treat date of 2007 stamped on them.

Those round posts are plywood pealer cores. They are treated with something. I have seen them used for years. IMHO they do not last forever, 10 or 15 years max. I have always said I would not dig a hole for one. My wife got some in a trade and I used them about 5 years ago. They have not rotted off yet but I am not expecting much. My favorite is 3"-3 1/2" pipe for corners set in a beam of concrete. steel t-posts in between. We have some split cedar posts on this ranch that have lasted well. Where I come from on the coast Split redwood was common, I split some myself when I was young. I since learned the posts split from old growth Redwood would last 100 years or more. Posts split from second growth only lasted 15 years.
