Growing seed corn

Anyone have any experience Line breeding OP corn then crossing to a F1 GMO? I am not wanting to start a debate about patents, just about out come of the project. What happens if you line breed F1s? What if you cross two F1s from different families? Does this give you three way cross?

You may [i:3290c7e7a5]not want to start a debate[/i:3290c7e7a5], but if anyone admits to doing so on a public forum, they open themselves up to unpleasant expensiveness...I have no skin in the game, but you're being a darn fool to invite the lawyers to the party this way, IMHO. Ain't no "private" on the internet, and not much many other places these days.

Don't know for sure, I'll bet if you do you might grow a big law suite. That GMO stuff is under someone paten for sure. If you really want to know all about all this contact ED WINKLE over on AG TALK, Its kinda his job. Bandit

I know, I know. I never drive over the posted speed limit, always wear a set belt, and never tear the tag off of my mattress. All I asked was a question, it is not like I am asking how to cook meth. Just what happens if you try crossing corn seed. Are we as a society so scared of litigation we cant even have a discussion? Sorry, I refuse to live in fear. If Monsanto wants me come, here I am. I haven't even raised corn In 3 years. I have stuck to raising hay and feeding it to cattle. Inputs are just to high for me. I will leave corn to the BTOs, But I refuse to not ask questions>

Dad used to grow three way cross back in the day, was the big thing. Then we had the short cold summer in the early 80s, and 105 day single cross -quickly- became the standard long season corn around here! Wasn't fun combining a few rounds of 27% corn every week in February to feed the cattle.....

Don't know much about breeding the stuff.

If you have 7 years you can make your own hybrids. there are tons of op varieties for sale on the internet get some and plant it when you see the ear shoot come out tear off the leaf and take some sort of small bag I use hotdog bags from the quick shop or small popcorn bags, fold the bottom over double and push it down between the stalk and the ear shoot till it stops then open the bag up and put it down into the slot you mad between the ear and stalk check it for when the silks come. when you first notice silks like 4 or 5 emerging with a sharp knife cut about an inch or so of the tip of the ear you will see a bundle of silks there cover it with the ear bag again. then you bag the tassel with a brown paper bag that is moisture resistant. the next morning bend the tassel down and whack it several times to shake pollen of into the bag. when you have your bag of pollen take the ear bag of and quickly put the pollen bag over it and staple it shut. what you have done is made a self, or inbred the plant. continue doing this until all the plants are very much alike, or homozygous. should take about 6 generations to tell if it will be. the plants through the generations will get less and less vigorous but try to select the lines to self that perform the best even with their reduced vigor. then once you have your two favorite inbred lines you will probably have several from even one variety take pollen from one and put it on the other and you just made a hybrid then with that seed you can cross it on another inbred and you have a three way cross that gives you hybrid yield and hybrid seed. with a 2 way cross your yield will be low maybe 40 bu per acre but with the three way you can have seed yields comparable to commodity corn yields. three way crosses have a bit of yield lag but tend to be better when under stress. almost no three way crosses are sold now days.
