Planting in the dark of the moon

yes I usually plant at night if possible. I've read before if you want to discourage weed seed germination you plant or work the ground at night. many weed seeds require sunlight to germ and by planting or working the ground at night you'll bury the weed seeds without them being exposed to sunlight and sprouting. planting when it's a new moon is easier then a full moon. the light from the full moon can make it hard to see where you've seeded.

I've heard of that, weed seed exposed to light.

Animal might be talking about planting by moon signs too?

Up here on the tundra and spring monsoon regions of Minnesota we just plant whenever things dry out and warm up enough to drag a tractor and implement through the fields in spring. We don't have the luxury of waiting for any other conditions. Two years of my life that was last days of March. Several years nothing worked until early May. Last year I got a tiny bit planted early May, but mostly ended up late May and early June before it warmed up enough, you just can't sit around watching a calendar when its like that.

Its an interesting thing tho, planting by the moon, and in a warmer location would be interesting to study more.

Yes, Paul I was talking about frost seeding clover according to the moon signs. While I am rambling, I have some left over soft red winter wheat and I am thinking about notilling it in my hay field about mid March for a little protein boost on first cutting hay. Have any of you done this before? If so how did it work for you?

I have done that with oat into alfalfa.

In my climate, the alfalfa does fairly well that first cutting even when thin. You don't see much oats.

The second cutting is where the alfalfa shows up weak and thin, and that is when the oats has kicked in and adds to the tonnage.

If you have it timed right the cut oats will regrow again, if it wasn't too close to headed, and so you will get a small boost to tonnage the third cutting as well.

That is how it has worked here, would do it again if needed.
