Been waiting to get my spring oats planted. Spent lots of time in the Old Farmer's Almanac and watching a couple of internet weather sites. Really amazed at how accurate the OFA really is. Yeah it's somewhat of a general forecast, but I have been using it diligently for the last couple of years and it's accurate enough to give you a good idea as to what is to be expected.

Rain is forecast for today so yesterday looked like the end of the longest dry spell I'd have till late April and it would be too late then.

So I "Mudded em in"........term we use here in black clay dirt where in the spring you "Mud in yer unyins".

Used the 3 pt. cone fertilizer spreader to broadcast them and that went real well as the drill would have probably gone 20' and been totally gummed up.

Drug the harrow over it afterwards. Harrow is the new type with all the bent up steel bars. It worked real well considering and just about the time it would load up it would pretty much clear itself. Didn't have to stop once to clean it out.

Slept real good last night with that off my mind.

I sure do live in a different part of the world, here in Minnesota. ;) suppose to be below zero this weekend.....

At least hopeful if I hear others are planting, spring might come around in April again.....

You've had better luck w/ the farmer's almanac forecast than we have.
The last two winters were predicted to be "wetter and cooler than average". Last year was the warmest and driest on record. The winter before wasn't much better.
I didn't even bother buying one this year. I should flip through it sometime though, we're headed for a 4th year of drought...

Soil temp is over 40 degrees in the morning and obviously gets warmer throughout the day. Ag agent here said 40+ and they will germinate. Glad I did as got another frog choker last night and everything is saturated. Agent said they are shallow rooted so don't need to go digging down deep to monitor the temp.

My forecast here in western NY calls for 2 more months of winter and possibly a month of mud regardless of what the farmers almanac says. After that I am considering planting some oats this year also. Got to find something to use my AC66 combine on.

Really sir my heart goes out to you. How you folks are able to make an ag crop in the Northern elevations is beyond me. I have enough trouble down here. But obviously you and your "siblings" do it.

Hat's off to you.

We plant corn in those conditions any more, yes good setup to get oats in. Good luck with it.

Hmmmmm. Soil temp 40 degrees, huh? The air temp was -25 here this morning. Our soil consistency (under a foot of snow) is something in the manner of cured concrete right now. (smile)

I asked about ordering seed oats yesterday... Said he had a list started somewhere(blank sheet of paper with "OAT ORDERS" written at top)... I was the first name on it. Snow is approaching waist deep here. Will think about oats 1st of April at soonest.

Well, "Muddin in the Oats" worked. Checked yesterday and had 1 -2" sprouts. Got plenty of crows and Cow birds too. We'll see how many sprouts make the journey.

Funny yesterday a flock of cows were working the field and a hawk came flying by at about 50'. Talk about rats scattering. He did my "scare crowing" for me.
