I live in central Michigan and I'm looking for a variety of corn that drys well and has good test weight. What do you guys plant for maturity in the northern states?

I've been planting Masters Choice here in mid Michigan for a few years now. I'm getting a good yield and a good dry down with it. Even with the fall we had this year, when I did start picking,it went through the feed grinder and unloaded and kept in good shape.

I planted 92-95 day. Didn't start planting until Memorial weekend. I couldn't tell you what the actual moisture was,but I've been picking ear corn going on 50 years and I can tell you from the way it came out of the wagon, went through the grinder and is coming out of the crib now,it had to have been at 20 or less.

Thanks. What was your yield? Dad didn't know the day corn he planted??? I combined it and the corn was at 22% test weight was 50. Have you ever tried an earlier day corn? I'm just curious what your results were?

Yield, again,it would be just a guess, but I filled my cribs on the fewest acres I've picked in several years. Last year when I grew Masters Choice,I had just a few more acres and filled all the cribs plus dumped 10 loads on the ground to finish up,then I left three wagons loaded to boot.
Two years ago I planted 88-92 day,but that was the year we had the real early spring and it almost dried down too fast. The silage corn was too dry. It finally fermented OK,but it took two weeks before it even started to smell the least little bit like silage. I started picking just a day or two after I got done silo filling and it was bone dry. I was done picking October 10th that year. Yield was halfway decent, but a later corn under those conditions would have put on more yield I think.
I grew some 80 day corn several years ago when I knew I was going to be short and needed it for feed instead of buying it. I picked that just after Labor Day. Yield left something to be desired, but I didn't have to buy corn.

If I had to guess at what he planted it was probably 94/95 day corn. Does master choice make an 85/88 day corn? I would have loved to shell in October and had it dry. Corn was what 5.00 a couple yrs ago in October?

I would imagine they do if it isn't sold out. I thought the dealer had sent me a catalog yesterday, but it was a calendar.
Here's a dealer locator for them. I get mine from Earl Burkholder in Sheridan.
