Throwing up terraces

I had an old John Deere promotional movie and they were putting up terraces with a mold board plow, have any of you done this, if so how is it done?

Maybe just hard for me to see in those you tube videos but, that land looked flat enough that it didn't need terracing, Maybe I am missing the whole point. I only wish my farm was as mild sloping as that ground looked to start with.

There were plows built specifically for building terraces(No. 100 Series Integral Disk Terracing Plows). I have built/repaired a few terraces with a moldboard &/or disc tiller(one-way). Servis Equip. Co. also built what was called a Whirlwind terracer that had one moldboard bottom and a pto powered auger.

I wish I had one. I was thinking of using a single bottom moldboard plow this spring to put some small trenches in in one of my poly culture plantations.

Years ago back in the 50 and 60s the county would come out to a farm and mark ware to plow a big head land to build a W ditch (as they called them) to drain ground. These could be built with the equipment a farmer had to farm with, Pull type plow and disk and packer and a grader blade on the back of an 8N ford. Simply plow a head land then plow 1 round (not as deep as the head land) away from the head land and you have a W ditch. Disk and use the grader blade to move the dirt away from the ditch back into the field and crown the head land up higher to make a ridge in the middle. Simple W ditch and they worked, But as equipment got bigger these didn't work so good and most were leveled back out. Bandit

Easily eroded soil with a steady, unbroken grade, no matter how light, can benefit from terraces. I just wish some people didn't feel a need to have a terrace every 50-100 feet, that's so tall and steep that a tractor simply slides off the side of it.
