liming in Winter?

That is about the only time lime is applied here in Eastern Iowa. Winter when the ground is frozen.

It's the only time I lime. No compaction issues if the ground is frozen. Ideally you should have your ph in line when you seed down your hay because since you can't incorporate it could take years to adjust the ph to any depth. They usually recommend no more than a ton of lime per acre per year if your not tilling the ground. If you put down a heavy coat on the surface, you end up with a really high ph in the top couple inches which can lock up any potash you have available.
