raised 3 hogs this year and yesterday we butcherd them. the smallest one would sometimes would sit like a dog and then would have a little trouble getting up like an old dog with bad hips. when we cut it open the guts were discolered purpalish blue.....sort of hard to explain. usually you see the intestines stomach and bladder are all white but this one it was sort of purpalish blue like it was bruised or the stuff was backed up. the other 2 looked good. the heart lungs and liver all looked good and nothing smelled bad. no sign of worms. the butcher said he had never seen it and called a vet and he didn't know anything like that? anybody ever seen that? we are not sure if we should eat it now.......

If I was unsure of it I would not eat it, probaly won't taste good to you anyway because of the thoughts that will be going through your mind every time you sit down to a meal of it.

normal guts on left, effected on right. they almost look inflamed.

I would have the whole thing up to the state college for necropsy. If you are going to raise more you would want to know what happened to this one. I would not eat it regardless.

What were you feeding it? First thing that comes to my mind is (questions, I don't have answers to.) that maybe this is what aflotoxin problems look like from feeding moldy corn? You would think though that all the hogs in the pen would've had similar problems if this were the case.

great news, butcher called and talking to the vet and discussing the chain of events he determined that what happened was he shot it to stun it and didn't cut the throat deep enough (because it was in the corner of the pen and the other 2 were kicking like crazy) so it was still alive for a time and died from the gunshot. when we gutted it he said the guts were flipped from it falling down. the vet says that caused the heart to still be beating and putting pressure on the intestines making it look the way it did. he seemed like he felt pretty bad about it not being a clean kill but it takes a big man to admit when he did something wrong.
