Been looking for seed for what I would call giant sunflower, not an exhaustive search so far but no luck. My daughter went with friends to a "pumpkin patch", some of their pictures were in a field of sunflower, many with very large blooms, seed heads. We were in the area and stopped by and I bought several of the seed heads from the ones I would like to have. The flowers were past the pretty stage and the heads were drying. I was picking at some of the standing heads and most of the seeds were blanks. A fist full of the heads was just $3 so no great loss if these seeds are blank as well.

Long story to ask if anyone messes with these things?? Are the blanks a condition of hybridization? First cross is viable, subsequent generations not?? Where might find some seed in a quantity greater than a 1/2 oz garden pack? I have about a 1/8 acre strip that they would be neat in. Thanks for any insights.

They are off-season (not taking orders yet) right now, but Fedco seeds out of Maine was selling 896 grams (~ 2 lbs) for $28 last years prices for mammoth grey stripe.

Website is there to poke through (probably still last years seeds right now), ordering usually turns on sometime December-ish. They have (or had last year) other varieties as well, but that looked like the representative of the "big ones" on a quick scan.

Fire ants eat my sweet corn seed. Then the crows get them just about the time they sprout. Seems the sprout is a good indicator of where the seed is. Then the squirrels get some.

I suspect your blanks are the result of critters of one kind or another.
