How is harvest going?

Around here folks are trying to get the corn out, but its not drying down worth a hoot. How can you afford to dry three dollar corn with almost two dollar propane? That has got to be a hard pill to swallow.

Around me, SW Michigan, not much is going on yet. I saw one field that they chopped for silage. Early beans are turning nicely, but later beans still have a lot of green. A guy down the road planted alfalfa a couple of years ago. Seems like every time he cut it, it got rained on. This year he planted beans. Pods look pretty good, but plants are still green.

Why??

Why not let it dry in the field for another month or 2?

I am and I will have winter here before them guys down south by you.

Beans may go next week. Corn will follow in mid to late October.

Well Gary, that's what I don't understand, when asked they reply is that they afraid of the weather.

no corn up here in my corner of the great white north, but harvest is slow here, weather has been ok the last few days, but the wheat is barely dry, and a lot of the other crops are the same too... and to top it off the weather guessers are calling for more rain again...

Good, still chopping corn, as far as me with propane I am going to ear pick it and let everyone else complain about the propane! Beans will start coming out in the next 10 days or so. Everyone cut there 4th crop or some 5th crop hay. I'm in sw wi, Hope it is going good for you, Tom

In my area, the grain elevator will average the moisture on total bushels you bring there. They have to be getting some dry in to except higher moisture corn because is what they do is blend it staying below what they would start docking at. Another reason is, some of these really big farmers have to get over a large amount of acres in a certain amount of time. Another might be, they want to do something else with the ground. Otherwise, I am like you and do not see the point in it. Let it dry in the field. Some corn out in my area. No beans cut yet.

Corn is looking great... ways to go yet though. Tried something different on the chopper this year. Hopefully will break up more kernels. The roundup and Banvel cleaned up the field well too.
4th cutting around the farm is ready for square bales or baleage.also

The corn is probably 75% done here (NEKS). I think moisture is a little high but the load I bought from a neighbor was fine. No beans for a couple of weeks yet. I think that I stretched them out a bit much due to rain during planting. I'm going to end up doing a few fields, waiting three days and doing some more, etc. I've got about 400 acres to get out. I am a little mad I didn't contract for more - I think it is going to be a good year. The first year I have foliar fertilized so we will see what happens.
