pumpkin patch cover crop

Had lots of weeds in the pumpkin patches, would planting oats, after the pumpkins are picked help out much? I only have a month or so left to get it to grow, or would I just be waisting my time? I'm in northern NY.

We use to go in and disk it and plant rye after we took off the pumpkins and then plow the rye down in the spring.

A buddy of mine raises pumpkins to sell. He is kind of tight lipped about his operation cause he not really want someone else to do the same thing. He did tell me that he palnts them on new ground every year. He has less weed problems that way. I think he likes to plant where there is just a touch of weed chemical carry over from the previous year.

Is this going to be pumpkins again next year? I don't think oats will do much for you, but rye might. It won't grow much this fall, but will grow fast in the spring time. You could then either plant into it if you are set up, or plow and plant.

Ok,I think I'm starting to get it. so my oats will only help by putting a little cover on the soil for winter, and give the deer something to chew. Rye will start regrowing in the spring and choke out the weeds before they get a chance. I'm new to grains, and oats is what I started out with. Would rye mature early enough to combine off? Or just plow it under? We plant around Memorial Day weekend. Thanks for the replys.

If you get a chance, look on you tube for a guy named Steve Groff. Farms in Eastern PA using lots of cover crops. He rolls and crimps some cover crops (timing is important with this) and plants pumpkins right into the residue left on top of the ground. This gives the pumpkins a real nice bed of mulch to lay on and when he harvests, there is no mud or anything on the pumpkins. Really looks like a neat operation.
