Rope with wrapped wire

Hi Folks

Anyone ever seen this before? we were taking a couple of long beams out of our old bank barn and with it came out an old snatch block with about 30' of hemp rope on it. So I wanted to save the block and tried to cut the very stiff rope off of it and (now I gotta sharpen the knife again) found that the rope was made with wire in it. it's really very strong and theres is virtually no stretch. is this stuff still made?

I'm eventually going to have to pull the rest of this barn down and was considering buying some good rope to do it with instead of chain or cable. Chains expensive in the lengths needed and while I can get spent elevator cables it's very hard to work with .... I wouldn't mind some rope like this if there is an advantage to using it.
