Thoughts on Resistant weeds

Years ago when roundup grains were developed weed killing was made simple.

Throw some roundup in the spray tank and kill every weed out there without killing the crop.

So simple some thought if 32 oz will kill the weeds lets try 24. That may have worked as well.

Some guys backed down even farther and a few weeds escaped. These weeds were some what resistant to the glysophate. Their offspring were even more resistant.

As of right now I have no resistant weeds that I know of. I use full rates of glysophate and adjuvants when I spray and always have.

I have 2 neighbors that tried to get by on the cheap path 6 or 8 years ago by lowering the glysophate rates and no adjuvants. They had a few escape weeds but thought nothing of it.

Fast forward to today. They have weeds that they cannot kill with glysophate no matter the rate and have to use more expensive chemicals to kill them.

All the neighbors around them still have control including me but the 2 who skimped have issues.

On a related note: I have CML. I have been in remission for 8 years but still take a daily dose of Chemotherapy. I asked my doctor why?

He responded if there are any CML cells in your system and you go off the meds chances are they are resistant to the medication and we may not be able to get them back under control.

Some thing to think about.

Gary, I think your theory is correct. When I started using roundup I would spray one application of full rate early to take out that first flush of weeds. When it was time for the second application my crop was big enough that I would take out the next flush of weeds with the cultivator instead of spray. That way I could achieve the many other benefits of cultivation and kill the weeds. Needless to say there are always some weeds escape the cult. I thought noway am I going to spray a second time just to get that dozen weeds in the 40 acre field. As a result I believe I was one of the first in the area to have gly. resistant weeds. It got so bad that like I said in an earlier post, I had to switch to Liberty crops.

Something else to ponder....

What about the weeds that are run over by the sprayer wheels, then sprayed ?

Are they injured by being run over ?

Do they take in the maximum dose of chemical that was applied at full rate ?

I think too many people have forgotten about pre emerge herbicides. I plant Roundup Ready corn,but I spray pre with Prowl and Atrazine. I only used 5 gallons of Roundup this year to clean up escapes. Mostly yellow nutsedge on low ground. Atrazine doesn't do a real bang up job on that. It's just nice to know I can clean up with glyphosate if I need to.

we are just seeing palmer amaranth in our area. this is a dang wicked weed. cross between pigweed and water hemp. after 6 inches in height, it has to be mechanically removed from the field and burned. each plant produces 100k plus seeds. if it gets away, it will take over the whole field. sheesh. then i just read about giant hogweed, it came from the caspian sea area as an ornamental. sap is highly toxic, causes burns and blindness. in the upper east coast and some in michigan.

Why do or how do these weeds, bugs, and diseases keep showing up?

If it isn't one thing it is another.

Palmer amaranth is not here yet but it is in Iowa.

funny thing is how do these weed seed suddenly pop up in a region where none have ever been before, over thirty years ago I helped different ones farm over a 15 mile radius and there was not a pigweed other than thorny ones around livestock to be found plenty of smart weed, along in that time frame we grew sweet potatoes and on one farm I used a fertilizer that was blended 10 miles away and on the side of the row where I side dressed the potatoes I had pigweed for the first time, my wife had worked in the fields from a child and didn't recognize the weed, I did because we had it at home a 125 miles away,then a few years after roundup was doing such a good job about the only thing used until palmer amaranth showed up out of nowhere man what a scourge now it's about under control whats next,oh yea the round almost eradicated the smart weed

Palmer is from the southwest u.s, desert area. It got to tenessee in a shipment of something, then got in to a load of hay that went to a large dairy operation in Indiana north west of Indianapolis. From there the birds have been spreading it.

We do not have any weed control resistance yet. Have always used the recommondations on the label,
Congratulations on your CML. There are at least four other drugs that can be used. Interferon is looking very promising to stimulate your immune system. My Uncle passed away this March from a really bad stroke. He was 87. About 15 years ago he had CML. Gleevec was in late testing stages and he got in the trials. He took it and recovered. He did anything he wanted to do.

Gleevec is what I am on and realize they have sister drugs that have been released to switch to if CML cells become immune to Gleevec.

Doc says as long as Gleevec is working we will stick with it.

Hopefully some day they will have drugs that work on all types of cancers.

I'm 57 and hope to reach 87 before something else gets me.

I also do about anything I wish to. The CML is under control.

I'm gonna tell you, I've got a problem like you can't imagine with resistant mares tale and pigweek. I've used Roundup mixed with crop oil, water condissioner, and Cobra. Still isn't touching them. It is scary. Fall tillage is the only resort after the beans are out.

for resistant pigweed varities we use a burn down of 24d plus round up make sure the field is clean not just browned pigweed will come back with a vengeance if not dead then valor at planting then come back with flex star gt while weeds are less than 4" then again if another crop pops up staying with labeled amounts, flexstar can cause some carry over problems,i know what I'm about to say may not sound right but try a small plot and see if it works,neighbor was complaining about not getting good control on mares tale ,his problem was he was running his boom to low, he wasn't getting spray in the top of the taller plants,it was burning the leave off from the nozzle height to the ground the top of the plant would wilt slightly then come right back in day or two,the same spray applied above the top of the plants worked
