completely off topic but i need some help

So I came in this evening and my wife showed me two glasses of water, the one from our tap was crystal clear the one from our washing machine was yellow but clear not cloudy. I need to look but I may have galvanized supply line in the wall but it is all copper in the basement. I know this is totally off topic for this board but I don't want to sign up to a home improvement forum that I will forget where it is on the internet by tomorrow thanks for you guys help

I assume she grabbed the sample as the water was coming in and did not dip it out of the tub.

Did this come on suddenly or over time?

Was one glass hot water and the other cold?

Do you have a softener?

I don't have an answer but I sure have a lot of questions don't I?

Maybe some one else will have an idea with those questions answered.

well she got the sample out of the stream as it filled the tub, but she did a second load and it was clear again, it could have been something with the city water as it has from time to time ran yellow and cleared up but not in a while.

Was tap sample from cold side and therefore not through water heater? Was washer sample warm/hot, and therefore through water heater? If so, you may have a bad sacrificial element or other problem in the heater.

No I'm not in Toledo lol south west Kansas to be exact both samples were from the cold line. no softener the water heater is electric but less than 2 years old though. I did cut off the anode rod though it is something everyone does here we have a lot of magnesium and iron in our water and it reacts with the anode rod making the water black and smell like rotten eggs

For what its worth, I had a copper fitting leak in my line for sink. When I went to get one to replace, they didn't have one exactly like I had. I got a couple fittings that together they would work. One being galvanized maybe, I don't really know what the heck it is made out of. I have noticed that the first water out of the line since, has been a little off color. After it runs a bit (maybe a glass full), it clears up. The only thing I can think of for my situation is, it has to be that non-copper fitting.

Doesn't make a lot of sense for someone to put copper in the basement and then switch to steel pipe in the walls. You should be able to tell by looking at where you attach the washer hoses. Is this a newer house sold as having copper pipes and you are thinking maybe they scammed on the hidden pipes? Why not PVC then? I read your post a couple times...not sure what your question is. Maybe you can clarify?

My home was built in I think 1962. as far as I know it has not happened again I have not seen yellow again and neither has the Mrs. I guess I just panicked a little when I asked the question. I have seen galvanized to copper a few times once in my first home same town but house was built in the 20s and once in my cousins house, same town but from the first decade of the last century.
