killing weeds with 2,4-d

sprayed some pasture this past spring that I put up for hay and used 2,4-d. majority of the weed I"m trying to kill is water hemp. seemed to do a good job of killing when I checked on it a couple weeks later, but went to mow this past weekend and the hemp is still there. will 2,4-d kill the plant but not the root?

It's probably just more seeds sprouting. The seed bank could last for years in the soil and periodic spraying will slowly get most of them.

If you can fall burn your pasture to kill weed seeds it will help a lot otherwise it may take a few years of spraying everytime you find weeds before they head out.

Water hemp will produce a new flush of weeds with every rain.

My corn fields were perfectly clean at waist high. They still are in the middle were the ground was shaded out but around the edges there is hemp from 2 inches tall to 2 foot tall.

If you could have sprayed again a couple of weeks after your first pass you may have kept it under control.

Or wait till later next year when the grass is taller to shade it out.

About the middle of August it will give up for this year and come back again next year.

If you can control it without it going to seed for 5 years or so you may not have to fight it as hard after that.

thanks for the reply's. sounds like I just need to keep spraying to get them under control. had some in another field but one spraying took them out, that is what's got me confused on this field. i'll let em grow a bit and spray them this fall and next spring. now that I was just thinking about this, the field I'm having trouble was flooded about 3 yrs ago. wonder if the seeds came in at that time also.....darn weeds.

Yup after the floods of 93 I had problems with Cockle Burrs in a bottom field with a creek through the middle. I never had cockle burrs before.

Couple of years latter I was 2 miles upstream hunting. The field was loaded with cockle burrs.

I then knew where all my cockle burrs came from a couple of years earlier.

I am still fighting those damn cockle burrs.

They like to come up late as well.

if I would use a pre emergent in the spring would that help kill the weed seeds from some of these things so I'm only dealing more with the plants after that?

not sold on 24d. I had some with atrazine and it killed anything it touched. Now I have some regular 24d and sprayed around the house. The weeds died but where the grass was, the Johnson grass is now.
