late planted oats?

Had two fields (both corn stubble - intended to plant oats for grain and seed a hay mix) that didn't get planted this spring, due to being so wet and then needing to get going on haying. It's finally drying out, and I have one field nearly ready to plant. Had been figuring on simply direct seeding to the hay mix, but since we have a lot of hay, but not much quality, I'm wondering if planting 1 1/2 - 2 bu. of oats per acre for forage might be a good idea. I've made h.m. bales and green chopped oats before, but that was April/May planted. I have about 30 bu. of seed oats on hand, but would it pay to plant them this late? (n/w WI)
 
Go for it.

Last year my neighbor planted bin run oats after chopping mid Sept.

It got about 2 foot tall before he turned the cows in for late fall pasture.

No heads but lots of foliage.

I second that! The specialist say that the late planted oats does not have the linen content that the spring planted oats does so it it more palatable. Yep go for it.
 
Thanks. We got showers the last two nights, but very light. I'll be making a finishing pass over the field with the Vibrashank today, then planting.
 
Ended up pulling the Vibrashank over the field twice, to finish smoothing out the ruts from chopping last fall. Got done about chore time, but a h.s. kid who works for me occasionally had asked if I had anything for him to do. So while I milked, he pulled the grain drill and cultipacker. Got done maybe 1/2 an hour before it started raining. Nice to finally have that field planted. I'll have to post back in 6-8 weeks when I know how everything turns out.
