Welp. we had 4 Highlands delivered today, 3 Heifers and a young bull.... Ran right through the fence. rattled from the trip I guess. This is a problem because they don't know us and they are scared so any tips on how to get them back would be great. Always was able to get known cows back because they knew us. these don't

Neighbor use to do the same thing. He would buy cattle to put on a creek pasture right next to my cattle. He would buy them at the sale barn and dump them out on the way home. They would run up the creek and jump right in with my cattle.

Finally talked him into bringing cows over that knew the farm and would stay put.

If your bringing strange cattle to the farm either dump them in a tight corral for a few days or put them with other cattle.

Good luck finding your cattle and check the neighbors to see if the cattle jumped in with theirs.

In a strange place? Good luck. Years ago,a neighbor let his brother talk him in to letting somebody bring 80 weaned western Charolais calves to his place. They brought them in at night and shut them in the barn. Next morning,he let them out on a single strand electric fence. They were GONE. I don't remember how many they finally got back, but I know they shot several of them out in the swamps and woods.

Good luck.

Same thing here a few years ago. 15 delivered, one got shot in the woods near the lake, another never found after several weeks of sightings. Different years ago, when everyone had livestock- now if cattle get out there are none to hook up with for several miles.

so far one neighbor reports one definatly is with his. He said these must be made of vennison as they jumped an 8 wire fence to to get in. I know one ran through a neighbors horse corral strung with cable of some sort.. he got his dog to chase her. A slight dip of her head took out a wire and i'm sure she didnt loose a 1/10th off her 1/4 mile time.

Some cattle are naturally spooky. These kind should always be penned for a few days when you first get them. And if they are naturally spooky, they should be turned out with some that are not. Certainly not by themselves. That's just to keep in mind for next time. With that said, first thing is first. Sounds like you know where one is. Need to find the others. They probly stuck together more than likely untill the one jumped the fence where it is at now. Thats a place to start. Might be easier to find the rest and get them into the same place the other one is at, than to try to get them back to your place. Then you could catch all 4 and bring them all back home at the same time. That is if you want to still keep them. Personally, I would consider taking them back to the sale barn or someplace that had iron pens. Spooky cattle ussually have a tendency to not be coaxed with grain ect. You can try it, but don't be supprised if you have to drive them to get anything done with them. My 2 cents.

Thanks for your thoughts I think you are right. The driver had also picked up a horse along the way and he aaid that horse feaked them out so they were really wound up by the time they got to my place.

Got any friends that are into roping/reinging? Might find a couple people around that would like to work their horses?

well 2 are with the neighbors cattle. he expects them to show up at his barn. The other 2 are in a small thicket. I was afraid they were in there, they could get stuck... Horns and short legs I doubt work well with all the deadfall in there. They won't stay out of the woods long enough to approach... we are going to try to coax them out with apples and grain in a brightly visible trough that we will move closer and closer to where they have to be. Guess we are working on cow time. if they were chickens we could just carry them :)
