I didnt plant our bigger garden patch,I had to get an operation,,, now the cover crop of wheat is heading out,I am getting better now,and think I still have time to plant squash, pumkins etc. in the patch,My question is can I Mow the wheat cover crop, then plow it under and till, and will the heads of the wheat give me problems sprouting? I have never let a cover crop grow so long, also I Usually plant rye as a cover crop, but my neighbor didnt have any,so I Planted the wheat as a cover crop. Thanks in advance,,,Larry

I'm not a farmer in the big sense, but the seed heads don't look to be developed far enough to give you trouble. I let my oats go to seed last year and plowed them under this spring. I only have a few volunteers that came up in my corn. Go for it!!!

It looks too immature to sprout. If the grains are hard and dry it will come up like the weed it is...or can be...but yours looks like it still might make a good green manure if you can get it under the soil.

Larry, check the wheat heads. If they are in the "milk" or soft dough stage, then you'll be ok. Pictures can be deceiving, but by the looks of the pictures, the wheat is pretty immature. I"d mow the patch, then plow it up and plant. If the wheatheads are more mature....as in hard grains developing, then you will have a problem with the wheat sprouting later.
