Question Abbout Oats

Are there different oats? Mt "volunteer" oats from last year are about twice as tall as the ones I planted this year. Both are heading out and seem to have a good crop. Or is it more a product of soil fertility?

Where I grow on central coast of California was traditionally oat producing area. Our area produced seed oats for other areas. The second generation was always plumper and better than the first. Now it seems no one is growing seed oats in CA. Seed oats is coming from Oregon. I would call it pin oats. Last fall I tried just discing one field dry before the rains came figuring there was enough seed on the ground after cutting hay. Even with the drought here I got the best crop in years and clean too. A lot of this I attribute to the second generation seed. I plan to exploit this technique in the future, seed is expensive.

Some like short oats as a cover crop for alfalfa.

Some like a tall oats to get straw.

There are many sizes and maturities.

As well, oats does respond to different fertilities, or can stay stunted with too wet ground.
