What kind of hay do you have. If your field was alfalfa chances are over seeding won't do anything. Other grasses, etc maybe if your other factors such as soil pH and nutrients are OK. I've never had much luck over seeding an old seeding. Worked better to plow it up, plant something else for a year and put down new seed.

It can be done, but it's tough. Chances are you'll not have much luck. But....it can happen. I"d wait until fall and sow in some annual rye along with your grass of choice. Sowing now will be pretty futile due to all the competition. If your grass does not grow well this fall, the annual rye will and at least you'll have much better tonnage next year on the first cutting. I think it's at least worth a shot.

Where are you located? I've had great luck overseedeing in the late winter or early spring.

If you can spread before a snowfall the snow protects the seed and takes it into the soil.

I have overseeded timothy and orchard grass.
