Summer Cover Crop

I have a food plot that has laid fallow for a couple of years. I sprayed last week and want to put in a summer cover crop. I'm thinking about some brown top millet. It would be done by September. Then I could do a wheat, pea and clover mix for the fall, winter and spring. Any other thoughts?

Your in Michigan aren"t you? I don"t know if Korean or Kobe lespedeza will do well that far north but it is a good summer annual legume cover crop that provides remedial fall grazing, probably do well with brown top millet.

I think we can grow lespedeza. Usually, the seed is sold out very quickly. I'll see what I can find.

www.welterseed.com -- These guys are in Iowa and every time I ever called them they were real helpful and made good reccomendations as to what to plant, I have bought a lot of seed from them over the years.

www.geneticseed.com -- this is a Texas outfit with good prices and a lot of seed that is hard to find, also chemicals and baler twine.

I am getting ready to put in Sudex this late. Usually any fall cover crops besides winter annual grasses like wheat and rye this far north need to be put in by August 15th.
