New corn planter

I am headed for home, Houston , from Minneapolis. In Iowa I saw some corn planted on 10" rows. I stopped the truck and measured. I called a cousin who farms and it seems that is a test field. He's not impressed as it takes a gps guided corn picker with a 20" header. He also doesn't know how they're going to spray with existing equipment.

He then proceeded to tell me about another planter that plants a double row 4" apart on 30" centers. He'll be able to use his existing equipment to spray and harvest. As I was going through Missouri just south of Kansas City I saw a field planted that way.

What other "test planting" techniques are you guys seeing?

Neighbor has been using a twin row planter for several years now, I kinda like that. I thought it was spaced 8 inches apart on 30 inch 'rows' so when you combine with a 30 inch head each stalk had to bend in 4 inches? I will have to sneak across the road with a tape measure now.....

I've seen more and more 15 inch spacing on corn, but jeez. Planting, spraying, harvest all become a headache.

I have a neighbor who likes to experiment. For some years he tried twin row corn, I think 6 inch twins on 30 inch spacing. IDK how he liked it, but it can be combined with 30 inch head. He also tried ripper shanks behind his chisel plow. We"re near sugar beet area where they use 22 inch planters for corn, soy, beets. My renter uses a 24 row 22 inch planter, likes the early canopy for both crops.
