Looking for advice on a pull type combine....

Small timer here, Like to be able to farm assorted small grains, beans, peas a few acres at a time. Harvesting seems like a bottleneck. I have looked at J.D. 30 and 42 pull types, but am open to suggestions and knowledge. Neighbors all say hire it out, that is not my style though. I'd like to do it.

AC allcrops were good combines and still a number of them around. I think starting with the AC72 they got rid of canvasses but a 66 with a canvass is still a good combine. Many parts are still available. On any of the old combines look for rotted metal when you find them.

I'll second the AC 72. Wasn't there a 90 pull type too that didn't use a canvas?
I had a 30 and 42 Deere. The 42 is hard to store. The cylinder is so narrow that they don't have near the capacity that you'd think. I did a lot of work with the 30,but if I had a choice between that and an AC with no canvas,I'd take the AC.

We had a McCormick 80 worked ok if set right .what I did was have somebody right behind the combine with a Haybine and only cut the grain with the combine that way the straw was cut and conditioned by the haybine and less through the combine it made great straw

(quoted from post at 06:56:59 05/26/14) What are thoughts on a AC model 60? One down the road for $500 Has sickle and windrow attachments.

Good machine. Only thing is the canvas drapers are very pricey to replace if they are bad.

I had a 30 (I think. It had an engine). I got it going, planted barley, everything was turning, shaking, etc. Grain going in, none going into the bin. It was going thru the rot onto the ground. I was doing it weekends only, working in a shop. It snowed and that was the end of raising grain. I sold it to a guy for a lawn ornament/display, had to cut a 12" tree out of it. He took it to the local engine show with the trunk still in it.

I had a 90 pull type AC. Good machine, did a good job cleaning grain. The 90 had the same body as the self propelled AC 100. More capacity than a 72.

All combines need to be stored under shelter unless you are in a very dry climate.

60 has a mechanical windrow pickup. 66 was improved with a rubber canvas draper pickup, so heads lost in lifting the windrow were not lost to the ground, they went into the combine. 66 was 6 inches wider cut, either would take two wide rows soybeans. 66 had a bigger grain tank on the "Big Bin" models.....early 66 had the smaller bin like 60 model. 66 came out in mid 50s, unloading system was better and could unload on the go.
