A few days back I pushed about 200 round bales up into a pile that was just laying around rotting.
I have an old Oliver P-9 disc that I pulled out of the weeds and hooked up to my JD 420 and decided to see if it would pull the disc and level off the ground where those bales were. A 420 is not much of a tractor to be pulling a 9 ft disc. But since it wasn't plowed ground I figured I'd give it a try. Didn't work too bad actually. Pulled it in 3rd gear and did ok. Of course I wound up a bunch of old fence wire and had to stop and cut that out.
Plowed ground or corn stubble would have been a 2nd gear proposition and only on the level. Any wet ground or incline at all and the tractor would be stopped dead in it's tracks. But I got it done and the motor, tranny and rear ends got enough of a workout to get everything heated up nicely. They are not much of a tractor, but they sure are handy and I put more hours on that thing putzing around the farm than any other tractor I own.
