I have a hunting camp in central PA, 4 hours from my house. Tilled up a small field (1/2 acre) that has not been cultivated for 50 years . Going to put soybean in this week. No time for soil sample. (I will do one before next year). How much lime, and what fertilizer would be your best guess? The property is in the mountains so spring is about a week behind lowland areas.
Thanks for any help.

Is this just going to be left as a food plot for wildlife? If so, its probly not going to be to critical. I would just do a soil test which will give you an idea for next year. If it were me doing a food plot I would plant several things. Like a few rows of beans, a few of corn, a few of milo, maybe even a strip of alfalfa. Beans are probly good untill fall and winter. Then the pods will shatter and the beans will be on the ground and when they get wet they are no good afterwards.

I prefer cow peas to soy beans. Soy beans have a poor resistance to browsing; cow peas good resistance. A pretty good plot is wheat, Austrian winter peas and crimson clover. If you do beans, that's what I would follow up with. A very good book for food plotters is"A Guide to Successful Wildlife Food Plots Blending Science with Common Sense." Covers everything. Published by The University of Tennessee. Craig A. Harper Author. $20.00 ppd.

Here we don't need lime, opposite problem soil is too high ph,
so really that one we can't guess, it depends on your soil. But
if your soil is low on ph, it would be good to fix that, as it won't
matter what else in your soil, the low ph binds it up and doesn't
let plant roots pry it loose....

30 lbs of P and 50lbs on K per acre will take care of it for a
food plot. And really most likely your soil might find that much
in it now, as others say, for a food plot its not critical.

You don't need any N for beans / legumes, they create their
own. They make an innoculate to help them get started
making their own N, but for a food plot for a 1/2 acre probably
isn't worth it.

If it goes I'll attach a pic with more info than you want to know
of what an average crop of soybeans uses to grow a crop plus
the plant itself. Remember with beans to discount the N
numbers because its a legume.
