Alfalfa dying

Been getting a lot of calls about last years alfalfa turning black and dying. Anyone else have this? Alfalfa seeded with the oats had a great oat crop did not cut alfalfa, came up greened up this year then turned. They are going to have it sprayed and plant beans.

No,but I have some that was seeded in oats last year that looks like it's just coming up. Got a lot of spots that look thin to bare, but when I walked out there, the stuff is looking like it's just starting to come. I'm holding off plowing up some old sod to go to corn until the last minute. I want to make sure that new seeding is going to be worth cutting and doesn't need to be torn up.

THis has me stumped. I've never seen or heard of this. I"ve been growing alfalfa for 50 years and have never seen this. Now, alfalfa that has been frozen would do this, but it always came back. I did some research into the different alfalfa diseases, and the ONLY one that would even resemble what you describe is "Spring Black Stem and Leaf Spot" However, with this, the leaves turn yellow and then wilt due to cold wet conditions in the spring.
So....the entire field turned black and died? Never heard of this on a new seeding.

I agree with Randall, and more favor frost/freeze damage. I'd leave it a while and see, if it's frost damage it will come back.
