mini-moldboards

The post in the implement forum regarding the jointers ("plow is dunn") reminded me of an article I read back in the mid 90s about one of the corn yield champions using mini-mold boards.
If I remember right the idea was to sorta' cross concepts with conventional plowing and no-till by working up a seedbed yet leaving the deeper root zone area untouched. It seems the main tool was a moldboard that was miniature and only went about 3 or 4 inches deep. I can't remember what if anything followed that pass prior to seeding.
Anyone else remember this or know anything about it?

The mini moldboards you are referring to, that were used by Franics Childs to get his high yields were a regular moldboard wth most of the board cut off.

It was also run in the ground as deep as he could without plugging the plow.

As was already stated, the original mini-moldboards are just standard moldboards that the ends are cut off (roughly 50%) so the turned furrow remains somewhat vertical rather than being laid over. Usually they plow deep. Later some aftermarket mini-moldboards were offered that functioned similar but had the more "polished look".

Ok, so what am I missing in how I understood their function. I was in high school at the time I read the article and didn't understand much of about soils at the time. Apparently I had it all wrong and have made wrong assumptions about why and what they were accomplishing.
What were they trying to do?
