I was wondering if anyone grew cotton some people are starting to grow it around hear, southwest Kansas and I was just wondering about the crop how much does a bag of seed cost and how many acres can you get from a bag? what else would you tell someone who knows nothing about the crop and is curious?

Nope. Corn took over for cotton since it is an all-around easier crop to raise and harvest. The price of cotton will need to climb a good bit higher before farmers around here will plant any again.

The question of the day is, how much cotton are you wanting to plant? The last patch I planted was about 6 years ago. 3 acres for our local living history museum. I got my seed from dad's cattle feed pile, so no clue what a bag of certified seed costs, but what I shoveled in a 50 lb. bag planted all of the 3 acres in a 2-row drill planter. Cultivated 3 times, no spraying. Heckuva lot of hoeing. Got $0.52/ lb after I hand-picked the stuff and hauled it to the museum. Cotton is not an easy crop to grow. It has to be hot, and it doesn't like to have it's feet wet, and the boll-weevil is not your friend, and last but certainly not least, it is a hateful mistress that will break your back and hip pocket. That was my 5th year of planting for them, and after I got the check I told them that this was my last crop, and they needed to find someone else. And if you like that one, I can tell you another one about my cousin in the Delta who grows the stuff big time, and about how much he's in debt for new pickers that he can only use once a year, and all that he's out on pesticides.
But hey, what do I know about cotton?
